Project Focus
This page examines my design process—conceptualizing ideas based on the design scope/strategy and presenting the final piece.
“10-Minute Stretching” • Book Cover Design
Design Approach: Colorful, clean, easy-to-understand design that illustrates simple stretches and clearly highlights time-bound position. Emphasis on a figure showing a person of color that differentiates our book in a line up dominated by white male figures. Illustrations integrate with type and small design elements inspired by the movements of the stretches add motion and direct the eye through the composition.
Final Cover Design
"Nutrition Now" • Book Cover Design
Design Approach: Cover should consist of a full bleed close-up of healthy food. As with previous editions,
the image should be positive, upbeat, and a little humorous.
Concept 1
Fresh vegetables served in a french fry container shows a healthy alternative to fast food snacks.
Concept 2
"You are what you eat." Eat healthy and your body will be healthy too.
Concept 3
A playful image depicting healthy gardening/eating.
Final Published Design
Using the concept of the Arcade Claw Machine, the image shows that the reader can make a conscience decision to choose the healthy option when presented with sugary candy. The cover design features a matte lamination and spot gloss on the apple, grabber, and title.
"Food & Culture" • Book Cover Design
Design Approach: Cover should be student-friendly, relatable, and internationally-focused. My approach was to illustrate not only local foods, but also to capture the cultural diversity through traditional textiles, patterns, and pottery.
Concept 1
Thai Chicken Red Curry and traditional textiles and pottery.
Concept 2
Italian Zeppole and traditional textiles and pottery.
Concept 3
Overhead photo of Chinese Dim Sum steam baskets.
Final Published Design
This version pushes the boundaries to feature the traditional Thai delicacy of fried grasshoppers. While still not popular in Western diets, insects are becoming a more sustainable source of protein in Latin American and Asian countries. My clients were thrilled with the concept and that I was able to think outside the box to present a modern idea. I incorporated a Thai background pattern to lower blue band. The title and edition number features a spot gloss lamination.
"An Invitation to Health" • Book Cover Design
Design Approach: Create a fresh perspective for the 17th Edition that invites readers into the image and encourages them to live healthy lives.
I wanted to show a new perspective, as previous editions only showed action shots from afar.* By showing only the front of the bicycle, hands on the handlebars, and the path ahead, readers can image themselves in the photo riding the bicycle. The concept was well received by the product team and the author, and the concept was picked up for other health titles in the series.
*Note: Previous editions 14-16 are not my designs, displayed only to show comparison.
